How to build a website for a small business: a plain 8-step guide

A small business website needs a few well-made pages, not many thin ones.

To build a small business website, decide what it must achieve, buy a domain name, plan four to six pages, write the words, choose a platform, design for phones first, test everything and then launch. You can finish this in a few weeks, and you do not need a large budget to begin.

Start with the words, not the design. A beautiful site with vague words brings few enquiries.

Step 1: Decide the one main goal

Pick the main thing you want visitors to do: call, send a WhatsApp message, book a visit or buy. Every page should lead there.

Step 2: Get a domain name in your own name

Choose a short name that is easy to say over the phone. Register it with your own email and login, even if someone else builds the site. This is the most common thing small businesses regret leaving to a vendor.

Step 3: Plan your pages

Most small businesses need only these:

  • Home: who you are, who you help and the next step.
  • Services or products: ideally one page for each main service, so each can appear in Google on its own.
  • About: real people and your story.
  • Contact: phone, WhatsApp, address, hours and a map.
  • Policies: privacy, and terms or refunds if you take payments.

Step 4: Write the words first

Write as you would explain your work to a customer. Answer what you do, who it is for, what it costs or how pricing works, where you work and what happens next. Real answers help visitors, and they give Google something to understand. Google's advice is to create helpful content made for people, not for search engines.

Step 5: Choose how to build it

Website builderA simple site you run yourselfMonthly fees and limits as you grow
WordPressEasy editing and many add-onsNeeds regular updates and care
Custom build (such as Next.js)Speed and custom featuresNeeds a developer for structural changes

Step 6: Design for phones first

Check the site on a phone at every stage. Keep text readable without zooming and buttons large enough for a thumb. Put the call or WhatsApp button where it is easy to reach.

Step 7: Set up the basics for Google

Our on-page SEO checklist covers each page in detail, and the Google Business Profile checklist covers local search.

Step 8: Test, launch and keep it alive

Send a test message through every form, tap every button on a real phone, and ask someone who does not know your business to find your phone number. After launch, keep your prices, photos and offers current, and keep backups running.

What it costs

Expect three kinds of cost: the domain every year, hosting, and the build itself. Our website cost guide gives ranges. As a reference, our business websites start at ₹14,999, with up to five custom-designed pages, and our care plan starts at ₹999 a month.

What you can skip at first

  • A blog with no plan to keep writing
  • A page for every small service you might offer one day
  • Sliders and heavy animations that slow the first screen
  • Paid add-ons you do not yet need

Common questions

How many pages does a small business website need?

Often four to six is enough to start. Add a page when you have a real service or a repeated customer question that deserves its own answer.

Can I build it myself?

Yes, a builder works for a simple site if you have the time. Hire help when the site must bring in steady enquiries, sell online or connect to other systems.

How long does it take?

Our business websites usually take three to four weeks. The step that most often causes delay is collecting the words and photos, so start those early.
